6 workshops and ideas of autumn crafts for adults and children

Autumn crafts

Autumn is a great time for needlework, because it gives us so many wonderful materials: leaves, vegetables, fruits, flowers, acorns, cones and twigs. And how cozy a house becomes if you decorate it with a décor in yellow and crimson tones. In this material you will find 6 ideas of autumn crafts with your own hands for adults and children with step-by-step master classes and a selection of photos for inspiration.

Idea 1. Autumn Topiary

Topiary is an ornamental tree that can be used to decorate a dining table, a chimney shelf, or space at the front door. To make it, you can use natural or artificial materials, for example: leaves, berries on twigs, acorns, cones, chestnuts, flowers, dried citrus slices, as well as felt, sisal, flax and everything that your fantasy tells you. In the next slider you can see a few examples of such autumn crafts.

Next, we present you a simple master class for making autumn ornamental trees from artificial leaves and berries.

Topiary of autumn leaves and twigs with berries

Materials:

  1. Clay pot;
  2. Wooden stick or branch;
  3. Two spheres from polyfoam or floristic foam;
  4. Materials for the decoration of the crown;
  5. Dry moss (you can replace it with sisal);
  6. Glue gun and a few sticks of glue;
  7. Scissors;
  8. Side cutters or pruner;
  9. Acrylic paints for painting the barrel, bowl and pot (optional).

Instruction:

Step 1. Cut a sharp object in a ball-based hole under the trunk depth of about a third of its diameter. Put hot glue in the hole and insert the barrel into it.

Step 2. Insert the second ball into the pot. If the ball does not sit tight enough in a pot, lay a newspaper around it. Cut a hole under the trunk 2-3 cm deep in the ball. Insert the barrel with the crown into the hole and adjust its length. Next, drop the glue into the hole in the ball, place the barrel in it and start filling the hole with glue, placing around the barrel and small pieces of paper. This is to ensure that the hot glue does not deepen the hole too much.

Trunk mount

Step 3. Paint the pot in the desired color, if you do not like its original appearance. In this project, the pot was painted with spray paint in the shade of dark bronze from Rustoleum (sold in construction markets, for example, in Leroy Merlin).

Painted pots

Remember that the design of the pot should be simple and unpretentious so as not to distract attention from the crown. If necessary, paint a barrel and / or balls at this stage. It is advisable to paint the balls so that the gaps between the decorative details are invisible.

Step 4. While the paint on our workpiece dries, sort the decorative parts according to their appearance and size. If you use artificial leaves, flowers and berries with a wire base, then, cutting them off, leave “stems” about 2 cm long. This is necessary in order not only to glue the parts, but also to stick them into the ball - then they will stay safer . If the "stems" do not have a wire, then it is better to cut the parts "at the root".

Step 5. Now it’s time for the most interesting thing - the creation of the crown. First, evenly distribute and glue the largest parts to the ball, then the middle ones. Finally, fill in the gaps with small decorations.

Step 6. Well, that's all, it remains only to decorate the ball in a pot with dry moss or sisal, having previously treated it with glue.

Keep in mind that the leaves will not stick immediately, but after drying the glue will hold well.

Stones should be additionally fixed with hot glue. In order not to be mistaken with the sequence, the details should be pre-expanded in the desired order. By the way, especially voiced elements should be placed opposite each other, so that their chimes in the wind could be heard better.

To do this, pour paints of each color into cups and let the children mix them themselves and paint first the inner part of the leaves, and then the outer. Crafts made from salt dough are quite fragile, so you need to paint them carefully, without pressure. Wait until the paint is dry and, if desired, cover the bowls with a layer of PVA glue. How to dry leaves and flowers

Method 1. This method is suitable if you want create a panel, applications or other non-volumetric crafts. Spread the sheets or flowers between the pages of the book at a distance of about 3 mm from each other and every day transfer them to other pages (also keeping an interval of 3 mm). During the week, the paper absorbs all the moisture from the plants, and you can use them for creativity.

Method 2 If your craft does not imply the use of flat leaves, then you can dry them by simply bundling and hanging upside down in a dry, but ventilated room. At the same time, keep in mind that the leaves will completely lose their color from the sun's rays, and will remain in the shade.

Method 3. This method is suitable for drying and preserving the color of the leaves and cornflowers. Fresh, freshly picked leaves / cornflowers blot with a napkin if they are wet. Place each sheet between two layers of wax paper and a paper towel on top of the resulting sandwich. Preheat the iron and make sure that the steam mode is turned off. Iron iron on a paper towel for 2-5 minutes with pressure. Turn the “sandwich” over and iron it again through a paper towel, then carefully remove the wax paper.

  • To prevent dried leaves and flowers from breaking, they should be dipped in a solution of water and PVA glue, diluted 4: 1, and then left to dry.
