How can you quickly refresh the bored interior of the kitchen or create a festive atmosphere in it? Simply simple - just lay on the table a new tablecloth! Choosing a tablecloth in 6 steps

Tablecloth is a table decoration, an important detail of its festive or daily serving and the entire kitchen interior. It mutes the sound of the instruments and protects the surface of the tabletop from household pollution.

1. Determine the purpose of the tablecloth.

Depending on the purpose for which you want to purchase or sew a tablecloth, the choice of material and its size depends. Tablecloths can be banquet, wedding, decorative or tea, but since we are talking about choosing a tablecloth for the kitchen, then there are only 3 options:

• Everyday - from practical fabrics (we will talk about them below) and with a small overhang of about 20 cm;

• Festive - festive tablecloths can be simply elegant, and can be thematic, for example, New Year's or children's. They may be somewhat in different colors and styles, they can have an overhang of 25-40 cm, if desired - on the floor, as in the photo below;

• Guest (tea) - it is not necessary to have such textiles, but it is very convenient if, for example, few guests come to you, who can be seated at the table in a folded and not in a folding form.

2. Find the optimal size.

Before going to the store or the studio, measure the table top - with the round one measure the diameter, with the square one - the length of one side, otherwise:

• The length and width of the rectangular table;
• The diameter of the small and large oval table top.

Now we decide what length of the overhang you need. It can vary from 20 to 40 cm - a large length is suitable only for banquet and decorative tables, and a smaller one will look too short.

If you buy a tablecloth in the store, then, in order not to be mistaken with the size, you can count the desired parameters and look for ready-made models as close as possible to them:

1. Tabletop length + (length of the desired overhang x 2) = tablecloth length
2. Tabletop width + (length of the desired overhang x 2) = tablecloth width

If you want to sew a tablecloth with your own hands, you need to add allowances to these calculations, but let's talk about this in more detail in separate article.

3. Choose a form

Everything is simple here:

• For a rectangular table fit a rectangular tablecloth, in extreme cases - an oval;
• For square - square or round;

• For oval table you need an oval tablecloth or a rectangular as in the photo below;

• For a round table - a round tablecloth or square;

4. Choose a color and design tablecloth

The color of the tablecloth depends on your personal preferences, the color scheme of the interior of the kitchen / dining room, and whether you want it to play the role of a color accent or, conversely, to balance the bright serving and the decor of the room.

The design and decoration of the tablecloth depends on the purpose of its purpose and on the style of the interior. Here are some tips:

• If you need a "workhorse" for every day, then let the fabric be with a dull pattern or pattern, since too motley will create a feeling of confusion on the table;
• If you want to buy a versatile festive tablecloth, then choose a fabric of basic colors - white, cream, beige, light gray with a discreet pattern. Of course, the most traditional and win-win option is white;

• Today, double festive tablecloths are in fashion as in the photo below, when both fabrics echo or contrast with each other in color and pattern;

• Consider the style of the interior. For example, in the Provence style kitchen polka-dot or vichy-woven fabrics, plain linen, burlap or crocheted, as in the photo below.

In style chebbi chic embroidered cotton or crocheted tablecloths with lace, ruffles and ruffles, flowered or checkered, and for Scandinavian style kitchens bright fabrics in stripes, with patterns or inscriptions, made using patchwork technique, etc. will do.

5. We select the material

Practical, easy-care fabrics are needed for everyday tablecloths:

• Synthetic fabric - polyester fabrics are easy to wash, as stains do not emit in them, in addition, they are durable, keep their shape, do not wrinkle, do not shrink, do not fade and are inexpensive. But synthetics loses in appearance with natural fabrics, and most importantly - it is flammable, so candles and hot dishes should not be put on such cloths.
• Teflon tablecloth - it is a modern hygienic, waterproof and fire-resistant material made of cotton soaked in Teflon. Teflon tablecloth is not like an oilcloth, but also not afraid of complex stains.

However, unlike the oil cloth, a teflon tablecloth is not terrible hot dishes or mold, as Teflon covers only cotton fibers, not clogging the holes between them and allowing the canvas to "breathe." Another plus is that they often have a very original design. For example, you can easily find Provence tablecloths - in a cage, in peas, under sackcloth or flax. Teflon tablecloth has drawbacks - it is a limited choice (compared to natural fabrics) and a short service life of Teflon impregnation, which over time will be damaged and peel off.

For a festive table setting, it is better to choose natural fabrics:

• Cotton - sits down after washing and is short-lived with daily use. When choosing the size of a cotton finished model or fabric for sewing, consider its shrinkage - add another 10 cm to the length of the overhang, i.e. it will be, for example, not 30 cm, but 40 cm.

• Linen - Linen tablecloths are traditional, beautiful, dense, heavy, durable and expensive. Linen tablecloth always looks noble and stylish. Cons: sits down heavily after washing, it is difficult to wash and iron. Linen fabric for sewing or a finished model also needs to be bought with shrinkage in mind, adding 15 cm to the desired overhang length. Of course, flax needs to be washed at a temperature of 30 degrees.

• Sackcloth - recently this jute material has gained great popularity due to the fashion for the style of Provence, country music, loft, industrial, chebbi chic. Wedding and festive tablecloths with flounces in a rustic or nautical style are often sewn from burlap.

• Silk - silk table textiles are a solemn and luxurious option that is worthy of the most elegant and elegant serving. Silk is durable, wear-resistant and moisture-resistant, but expensive, capricious in care and requires careful handling.

6. Choose additional accessories

If you wish, you can complement the tablecloth with napkins, treads or a runner, that is, a narrow tablecloth, which resembles a Slavic bench hammer.

• Runner (path, tablecloth-runner) - either one track is put along the table (it is possible without an overhang) or somewhat across (with an overhang).In the first case, dishes are laid out on the runner, a vase of flowers, etc. In the second (photo below), the tracks play the role of pometarennikov.

• Podtalnik - can be made of different materials - wood, plastic, fabric, cork. In trend are treads made from woven rattan or bamboo as in the photo below.
