Russian cuisine in a city apartment

Kitchen design in the Russian style

For some, the Russian-style kitchen is presented as a kitchen in a village hut, for the second - in a noble estate, for third - in a Russian country house, for fourth - as a kitchen in the style of the Stalinist empire or Soviet constructivism, well, for the rest ... as a kitchen decorated with motifs Gzhel, Khokhloma and other folk decor. But all these ideas are united by one feature - the atmosphere of home comfort.

In this material, we prepared 7 tips on interior design of Russian cuisine in a city apartment and 30 inspiring photos.

1. Choose a special mood for your kitchen

First of all, decide which style of Russian interior is closest to you: the style of Russian country house, hut, manor, “old Moscow” apartment or Soviet retro? Or maybe you really like the motives of Zhostovo, Khokhloma or Gzhel paintings?

Here are some tips to help you decide on the concept of a future kitchen:

  • If you live in a house with special features, in an old town, say, the Golden Ring, or just close to any historical landmark, then why not be inspired by this heritage? For example, kitchen in stalinka can be arranged in the style of the Stalin Empire style (pictured below), and the kitchen in the apartment in a pre-revolutionary house in the style of a classical noble estate.

  • You can search for a source of inspiration at home. They may be your existing antiques, heirloom, or just an interesting rarity. For example, antique furniture, a collection of Soviet porcelain, lace tablecloths, Viennese chairs, a samovar, and other, at first glance, ordinary things.
  • If you like any kind of folk art, for example, Zhostovo trays or Palekh, then his motive can be used as a basis.

2. Think over the color scheme.

Typically Russian colors are, first of all, deep and saturated shades (burgundy, red, purple, malachite, black, etc.), as well as gold and all wood shades.

Composing the color scheme of the future interior, do not forget about the following principles:

  • The smaller the room, the brighter and more neutral the color scheme should be. Bright colors, for example, in the form of Khokhloma painting, are allowed here only in accents.
  • If the kitchen is poorly illuminated, then for walls, floors and kitchen set it is worth choosing light and warm shades. If the kitchen faces south, then you can choose a cold range, for example, white and blue in the style of Gzhel as in the photo below (scroll through!).

3. Do not pursue authenticity at the expense of functionality and convenience.

To create a kitchen design in the Russian style, it is not necessary to recreate the interior with historical accuracy.

  • Style decisions should not be at the expense of functionality. After all, the kitchen, above all, must be convenient for cooking, storage of things and meal. Therefore, everything in it, and especially technology, must meet modern requirements.
  • The atmosphere of Russian cuisine can be created by things not at all of Russian origin. For example, the authentic atmosphere of a Soviet-style kitchen can be diluted with things. Scandinavian design (example in the photo below). And in the kitchen in the style of a Russian manor or a hut, classic Italian furniture and French antiques perfectly coexist.

4. Natural materials - the secret of the comfort of Russian cuisine

This is especially true of furniture and decoration. On the other hand, sometimes high-quality imitations are much more practical than originals. For example, "linen" curtains from blended fabrics are better washed and less wrinkled.

5. Use ornaments in moderation.

The motives of folk crafts are so colorful and dynamic that with an overdose they can overload the interior and even make the space smaller. Therefore, they should be used only as an accent and surrounded by neutral, monochromatic surfaces. Here are a couple of tips:

  • AT small kitchen ornaments should not be too large and bright. So, for example, an apron with tiles here would be preferable to an apron with photo printing of large colors of Zhostovo trays.
  • Gzhel, Zhostovo, Palekh, Khokhloma painting can and should be diluted with a simple cage, peas or strip (in textiles). It is especially good to use this technique in the kitchen in a rustic or country house style.
  • Facades of kitchen set - not the best place for Russian ornaments. Much better they will look in their traditional form: as a picture, in an apron or on an accent wall. Below we present you a selection of photo examples of how you can beautifully fit in the kitchen interior.

6. Restorations and alterations - the secret of uniqueness and cost savings

While taking on the design of the kitchen in the Russian style, do not be afraid to use old and broken things, if they can be restored and repaired. Old chairs can be repainted, varnished, changed upholstery, strengthened connections (for more details, see here). Buffets and lockers can look new, if they just change pens. However, new things can be altered. Often they need artificial aging or decoration.

7. Pay attention to the decor

As you know, style create details. Here are tips on choosing a decor for Russian cuisine in different variations:

  • Decor for the kitchen in the style of Russian garden: lace tablecloths and napkins, lamp shade, samovar, Soviet porcelain sets or Gzhel, wicker baskets, Zhostovo trays, old Soviet or classical furniture, Viennese chairs, light white curtains, retro clocks, rustic chandelier.
