When the kitchen furniture has decayed or just ceased to like, do not rush to buy a new one, because, most likely, it can be updated with your own hands. All you need for this is a couple of free hours or days, a thoughtful idea of rework, some money and one of our instructions.

Method 1. Painting kitchen chalk paint
Do you want to update your kitchen set to unrecognizability with your own hands? The best way to do this is to repaint the facades with chalk (mineral) paint. Why is it chalky?
- The fact is that this type of paint has a thicker consistency and enhanced adhesion properties, due to which it fits perfectly on any surface - even on laminated chipboard / MDF. Moreover, chalk paints can do without tedious sanding, and sometimes even without a primer.
Chalk paints are also good because they give a painted surface a texture similar to that obtained when painting a wooden surface. Therefore, even the most ordinary kitchen with film facades after such an “update” will look much more noble.
- In Russia and the CIS, you can buy chalk paints from designer Daria Geiler, foreign manufacturer Annie Sloan, Kazakhstan’s Vernenskaya Manufactory, etc. You can also make chalk paints with your own hands using recipes that are easy to find on the Web.

For painting the kitchen you will need:
- Primer (special for chalk paints or alkyd, if the furniture was painted with oil stain);
- Chalk paints (preferably with a 10% margin);
- Matte moisture resistant varnish (acrylic or polyurethane).
Useful tips
- Consumption of materials calculated by following the recommendations of the manufacturers. It is especially important to correctly calculate the paint consumption. If it is not enough, you will have to paint the remaining areas with paint from another lot, which, due to the peculiarities of the production, will differ slightly in tone.
- What better varnish - polyurethane or acrylic? To cover the kitchen to withstand extreme loads, it is safer to use polyurethane varnish. However, if you rarely cook and you do not have pets, acrylic lacquer is perfect, especially since it dries faster, does not have a strong smell and is cheaper.
- Brushes: two synthetic brushes for primer and varnish, as well as one natural or synthetic brush with a width of about 4 cm (natural brush gives a more pronounced texture);
- Degreaser, for example, White Spirit;
- Sandpaper with a grain of 100–180 microns;
- Ladder;
- Film and masking tape (to protect non-painted parts);
- Screwdriver;
- Gloves.
How to paint the kitchen set:
Step 1. Preparation
First you need to remove the handle from the facade. The floor, walls, apron, tabletop, glass inserts, fittings and other surfaces that you do not want to paint, you need to close the film and masking tape. Next, clean all parts of the fat (preferably with a degreaser), stains and dust.
- Do I need to remove the facades? It is not necessary to do this, but it is more convenient to paint it.
Step 2. Primer and / or sanding
It is not necessary to sand the old paintwork, film or lamination, and it is necessary to treat it with a primer in 2 layers. In this case, each layer of primer should be allowed to dry, and then process the primed surfaces with sandpaper to even out the coating and enhance the adhesion of paint.
- However, if the lamination has a strong gloss, then it is desirable to remove its upper shiny layer with fine-grained sandpaper - so the coating will become even stronger.
Tips:
- If you are not too demanding on the result (for example, if the kitchen is temporary, very old or inherited for nothing), then you can do without a primer. All you need to do is to wash the facades from grease, then paint them in 2-3 layers and finally cover with 1 layer of varnish.
- Want to achieve the most even and durable coverage? Then it is necessary to sand the surface after each layer of primer, paint and varnish (except finishing layers).
- Before you start work, test the paint on any subject.
- If you want to save, paint only the facades and visible parts of the frame, and the interior walls and shelves of cabinets can be painted with paint cheaper or left unchanged.
Step 3. Coloring
As soon as the primer dries, proceed to applying the paint in 2-3 layers, allowing each layer to dry completely (one layer of chalk paint dries in only about 30 minutes).
- To cover the dark coating with white paint may require 5-6 layers.
Step 4. Varnishing
When the finish layer of paint dries, you can proceed to applying varnish in 2-3 thin (!) Coats with a synthetic brush (not used). It is desirable to give each layer completely dry for about 24 hours.
Step 5. Finally, we return the fittings and facades to their places.
Voila, the old kitchen is as good as new!

Method 2. Wrapping facades with self-adhesive film
The fastest, budget and easy way to restore kitchen furniture is the design of its surfaces with self-adhesive film (self-adhesive wallpaper). In contrast to staining, the sticking of the film is also good because it allows you to return the kitchen to its original state after some time. For those who live in a rented apartment or just love to change, this way to update the kitchen will help with a bang.
- The service life of the furniture with glued film will be 2-3 years in good condition.
- Most of all, this method of conversion is suitable for kitchens with solid facades without panels and relief parts.

- Vinyl self-adhesive paper (with stock);
- Sharp scissors and breadboard knife;
- Ruler and centimeter;
- Squeegee for smoothing with a hard and soft side;
- Rag without pile.
- Screwdriver.
How to glue the kitchen with self-adhesive wrap with your own hands:
Step 1. Using a screwdriver, remove the handles from the facades, if you wish, you can also remove the facades themselves - it will be more convenient to paste them over.
Step 2. Wipe all surfaces including the ends (!) Clean and dry, especially paying attention to fatty deposits - it is better to remove it with a degreaser.
Step 3. We start to glue the film. Remove part of the substrate from the film and attach the canvas to the facade leaving 3-5 cm free on top and on the side - these surpluses will later be wrapped around the edges. Take a squeegee and proceed to smoothing the film, expelling bubbles, gradually going down and peeling off the substrate. Movement should be smooth and slow. Reaching the bottom edge of the facade, move away from it 3-5 centimeters and cut the canvas.
Tips:
- If desired, you can pre-cut the canvas to the size of the facade with an allowance of 2.5-3 cm (for facades of standard thickness).
- The film fully seizes only in a few hours, so do not be afraid to make a mistake - all the flaws are correctable.
- If there are small bubbles on the film, you can gently poke them with a thin needle and smooth them again.
- You can purchase the film in 2 colors to create a stylish contrast: light top - dark bottom.
Step 4. Now, when the facade is almost completely plastered with film, let's take edges and corners:
- First cut the corner portion of the free film under 45 degrees as shown in the photo below. Thus, you will have two “wings” along the two edges of the facade.

- Now gently wrap the free edge of the film on one of the edges and smooth out. Next, wrap the remaining corner on the adjacent edge of the facade as shown in the following photo, and cut off the excess.

- Similarly, decorate the second edge with a film, but this time cut the corner at a right angle.

- Finally, smooth the seams tightly and repeat the procedure with the other corners.

Step 6. Wrap all frontal parts of the headset, the visible parts of the frame and the base with the film as described. If desired, vinyl can arrange the shelves and the inner walls of the cabinets. However, it is not necessary to do this.
Step 7. At the last stage, replace the facades, if you removed them, as well as the pens, making holes in the right places with a knife or sewed.

Method 3. Decoupage kitchen
Hand painted - It is very beautiful, but difficult or expensive. For work you will need:
- Three-layer patterned napkins or decoupage cards;
- 2-3 flat squirrel brushes (for putting glue and drawing on glue, and also varnish);
- Scissors;
- PVA glue;
- Pencil;
- Acrylic varnish (matte, glossy or craquelure effect).
Tips:
- Decoupage cards are more suitable for decoupage kitchens, not napkins - the pictures on them are ideally combined with each other and can be large in size.
- The main thing in the furniture remodeling using the decoupage technique is the right choice of drawings. They should fit into the interior of the kitchen in color and style.
How to transform the kitchen in the decoupage technique:
Step 1. First you need to degrease the selected place with alcohol or degreaser.
Step 2. Carefully separate the patterned layer from the napkin, then cut out the desired print from it.At this stage, the drawing can be “tried on” on the facade and at the same time make a mark where it should be located.
Step 3. Now we grease the reverse side of the cut-out pattern with PVA glue and put it on the facade in the right place. Next, gently smooth the cloth with a brush, moving it from the center to the edges, and blot the excess glue and remove it with a slightly damp cloth.
Step 4. In the same way, glue all the remaining napkins.
Step 5. If desired, the kitchen decoupage can be modified by hand-painted. When the glue and paints are dry, the pattern can be sealed with acrylic or polyurethane varnish in 2-3 layers (between the layers we allow the pattern to dry completely).
