How to clean the pan outside and inside - 12 best ways

How to clean the pan

Honestly, it is often very difficult to clear the pan from the frying pan and fat, especially if it is old or badly burned. But there is also good news: most of the persistent pollution can still be managed by penny means that you already have in your home (or at least significantly simplify the task). The main thing is to choose the method that is suitable for your pan. After all, what will save the cast-iron saucepan, teflon pancake maker can hopelessly destroy.

In this article you can find almost all traditional and non-standard methods of cleaning pans of any type: cast iron, stainless steel, aluminum with non-stick coating (Teflon, enamel, ceramic, marble) and without it. Just choose the recipe that suits you.

12 ways to clean the pan

Method 1. How to clean the pan with vinegar and soda (universal method)

This method is the fastest and most effective, and besides, universal - it is suitable for removing most of the dirt (soot, soot and old fat) from any type of frying pan except for those that have a non-stick coating. It does not require the use of aggressive chemicals, so you do not even need rubber gloves. Just relax and follow the instructions!

What is required for cleaning pans

You will need:

  • 1 glass of water (or more if the pan is large and deep);
  • 1 cup of 9% table vinegar;
  • 2 tablespoons of baking soda.

Instruction:

Step 1. Put the pan on the stove, then pour a glass of water and vinegar into it.

Step 2. Bring the solution to a boil (at this stage, some of the soot should already be removed).

Step 3. Remove the pan from the heat and pour baking soda into it. The mixture should hiss!

Step 4. Empty the pan and wash it in the usual way with a sponge.

Tips:

  • Places with super stable contamination can be treated additionally with soda or soda paste (soda + a couple of water droplets) and leave for some time.
  • Sometimes the reaction of soda with vinegar solution turns out to be strong and the contents of the pan can “run away” behind its walls and stain the cooker. To avoid this, you can first drain a little solution and only then pour baking soda.

Method 2. How to clean the pan with vinegar and soda outside and inside without boiling

  1. Place soda on the contaminated area.
  2. Pour 9% vinegar on top of the soda and let the effervescent foam work for 30-60 minutes.
  3. Clean the pan as usual with a stiff sponge.

Method 3. Boiling with soda (for cleaning all types of pans, except aluminum without non-stick coating)

In most cases, you can clean the pan inside and out by boiling it with soda. This recipe is very simple and suitable for utensils of any type.

  1. If you want to clean the pan just outside, pour about a liter of water into it and add about 100 g of soda.If you want to clean the dishes inside and outside, then use a large metal basin or bucket and fill it with soda solution from the same calculation - 1 liter. water / 100 g of soda.
  2. Place the pan / basin with the pan on the fire, bring the solution to a boil, and then forget about cleaning for another 20 minutes.

  1. Remove the utensils from the heat and let it cool, then wash in the usual way, in difficult places using a hard sponge or scraper (if there is no non-stick coating). During the cooking of the frying pan, the soda solution will soften and remove most of the fat, scale, and remnants of burnt food from it.

Tip: the boiling time of the pan can be increased to one to two hours.

Method 4. Boiling according to the Soviet recipe: laundry soap + soda + silicate glue (to remove carbon from a cast-iron, steel, aluminum or aluminum frying pan)

This old and proven method works in the most hopeless cases when you need to remove a perennial layer of soot from the outer part of a cast-iron or aluminum / duralumin frying pan.

You will need:

  • Metal basin or bucket of a suitable size (for example, a volume of 10 liters);
  • 1 piece of laundry soap 72% (optional);
  • ½ cup of silicate glue (aka stationery or school glue and water glass);
  • ½ cup soda ash (sold in household goods) or half a pack of baking soda;
  • Scraper (can be a table knife);
  • Grater (medium) and metal sponge.

Instruction:

  1. Fill the basin / bucket with water and bring it to a boil over high heat.
  2. While the water is heating, grate a laundry soap (optional).
  3. As soon as the water boils, reduce the heat, pour all the soap chips into the basin, stir them, and then add half a cup of glue and a half of soda / baking soda. At this stage, do not forget to open the window and turn on the hood!

  1. Finally, dip your pan into the resulting solution after removing the handle from it. If the handle is not plastic / wooden, then lower it into the basin. Now it remains to be patient and cook the pan for 1-4 hours, depending on the degree of contamination. During this time, some of the soot and fat will lag behind the pan, and the rest will soften.

  1. After boiling, rinse the pan, transfer it to the sink or clean bowl (plastic can be), then proceed to remove the residue with a metal sponge / scraper / knife. Do not overdo it with the tools so as not to remove the enamel on the outer walls - if you remove it, the pan will quickly be covered with a new layer of soot.

Tip: you can carry out the boiling procedure for several approaches (cooking time can be reduced to 30 minutes), updating the solution and removing the softened coating with a scraper and a metal sponge.

Method 5. Boiling with detergent and oil

According to many users, this method more effectively removes soot from both outside and inside.

  1. Fill a large basin with water, add a few tablespoons of sunflower oil and a little detergent to it.
  2. Put the basin on a medium heat and immerse in it the dirty utensils. Bring the solution to a boil, then wash the pan as usual.

Method 6. How to clean a burned pan by boiling (except pans with non-stick coating)

  1. Put the pan on the stove and turn on the medium heat.
  2. Once the pan is warm enough (check with a drop of water), pour 1 cup of water into it and cook a little more (add some dishwashing liquid if you wish).
  3. Then use a wooden spoon or silicone spatula to scrape away the fumes from the burned areas.
  4. Wash the utensils in the usual way.

Method 7. Soak with a cleaning solution for mild to moderate contamination

  1. Squeeze a few drops of dishwashing liquid into the pan, add hot water and let it stand for a few hours or leave overnight.
  2. Then clean the utensils as usual with a sponge.

Method 8. "Scrubbing" baking soda (not suitable for Teflon and aluminum frying pan!)

  1. Make a paste of equal parts of baking soda and warm water.
  2. Treat the paste soot, soot or greasy plaque.
  3. Rinse with warm water and repeat the procedure if necessary.

Method 9. Boiling with laundry soap (for all types of pans except aluminum)

This method is well suited for removing grease and soot from any type of griddle.

  1. Rub a quarter of a piece of soap (72%) on a medium grater.

Laundry soap and grater

  1. Put the soap shavings in the pan and cover with water, then heat the mixture, not boiling.
  2. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside to soak for another couple of hours.
  3. Rinse the pan, then sponge with dishwashing detergent.

Method 10. How to clean the pan from rust

Rust is easily removed with dry table salt. Just rub the problem areas, then wash and dry.

Method 11. Clean the pan with powerful chemicals - top 3 super efficient products

In our opinion, powerful household chemicals are indispensable if you need to quickly and with minimal effort clean the pan from carbon and fat. The main thing is to take precautions, use rubber gloves, work with the window open and do not process the dishes for too long. They say that if you cover the pan with Schumannom and leave it for the night, a hole may form on it.

  1. Amway Oven Cleaner - it is expensive, it is sold only through the Internet or dealers, but it removes even old carbon and fat in a few minutes, at the same time it is economically consumed, it is washed off more easily than its counterparts and practically does not stink. If you have animals and children, then this tool is indispensable in the household.

Schumann and Amway

  1. Shumanit bugs - It is cheaper than Amway and is sold in many hypermarket departments. Slightly less effective than Amway (for example, very old pans may not always be washed off), but still very effective. The main disadvantages are a pungent smell, which is felt even when the window is open, and the difficulty of washing off the product itself.
  2. Sparkling cauldron - Of inexpensive means Sparkling cauldron - the most powerful.

Here is the general instruction:

  1. We treat the problem areas with the tool, wrap the pan in the bag (so the smell does not spread throughout the room) and leave it for 15-60 minutes depending on the degree of contamination.
  2. Remove dirt and rinse dishes thoroughly two or three times. For fidelity, the pan can be wiped with vinegar to remove residues.

Tip: instead of the package, you can use food wrap.

Important! All listed grease removers are not designed to clean aluminum and teflon pans.

Method 12. Mechanical cleaning method

Mechanical cleaning methods are relevant for old steel, aluminum and cast iron pans, when folk methods and chemical agents do not help to remove the perennial layer of soot and fat. But all mechanical methods have one major drawback - removing the layer of dirt from the outer walls of the dishes, almost always removing the top layer (enamel, anodized layer), which means that in the future the pan will be faster and more covered with fat and soot. After such a radical cleaning, the bottom of the cast-iron / aluminum pan should be ignited with salt and oil.

Here are some traditional mechanical methods for cleaning pans:

  1. Sandblasting. To upgrade your hopeless assistant, you need to pass it for a small fee to the nearest tire shop. The auto mechanic will place the utensils in a special chamber where, due to compressed air and sand, the deposits will be removed in a matter of minutes.
  2. Cleaning with a sander. This method of cleaning can be rotated at the cottage by yourself with the help of a grinder or a grinder with a flap end circle.

Rules for cleaning pans depending on the material and tips for prevention

Different types of metals and coatings react differently to acids and alkalis, prolonged soaking and heating. When starting to wash your pan, find out contraindications (if you look at the table on your smartphone, turn it to a horizontal position - the whole table will go on the screen).

  • It is possible to wash aluminum pans (without coating) with detergents for glass and porcelain dishes, soap solutions with the addition of ammonia.
  • Any dishes need to be washed only after it has cooled naturally. If you drastically transfer the hot pan to cool water, it can deform. This is especially true of cast iron, aluminum (coated and without) and ceramic pans.
  • Before soaking or boiling the pan, do not forget to remove the wooden / plastic handle or simply do not immerse it in water.

And one more very important point ...

After washing the cast iron, steel and aluminum pans, it must be calcined with oil and salt to restore the natural non-stick film. Heat a Teflon pan on low heat for about 30 seconds, then turn off the heat and smear the bottom and inner walls with a teaspoon of vegetable oil with a paper towel or clean rags.

    Boiling pans in a mixture of water, soap, glue and soda does not lead to anything positive, especially with old carbon deposits, which is proved in one video posted on the network. If, after boiling, you need to rub them with scrapers, then sorry, with the same scrapers and without boiling in this slush (especially half a day)))) you can scrape off the carbon deposits, making efforts. Advice - about anything. Sometimes you are just amazed when they give advice, remaining absolutely not in the subject of the question. Here on one site they gave advice on this issue, so to speak, professionally. It is said there that the Teflon frying pan from soot, both inside and outside, is easier to clean, because it does not stick to the walls of this pan and does not burn anything, because, attention, it is both inside and OUTSIDE !!! covered with teflon.))) I don’t know such a pearl who can give out to the mountain, signing in complete ignorance, because for teflon pans only the inner working surface is covered with teflon, and not the whole frying pan. But here, in all seriousness, they all tell us that the whole pan is covered with Teflon and that you don’t have to bother with the soot on the outside, because it practically doesn’t happen.)) On another site they list cleaning methods for different pans of different materials and list the pans by type: Teflon, stainless steel, cast iron, ceramic. And that's all, no more frying pans.At the same time, aluminum, frying pans, of which the absolute majority are on sale and on farms, do not exist at all, well, they are not there, and that's all.))) Even though both teflon and ceramic frying pans are made of aluminum, only internal, workers , their surfaces are covered, in some of them, Teflon, in others with ceramic coating, and outside - all the same aluminum, on which the carbon is formed, which is required to be cleaned.)))

    Comment about anything, not an article. The author of the commentary would like to first “zasrat” the pan to impossibility, and then without any difficulty to wash it with a simple rinse. It does not happen! The same "Schumanitm" to clean and also need to make efforts, plus the smell is not transmitted.
    The method of boiling in a mixture of soap and glue works. Grandmothers cleaned, mothers cleaned and we clean as needed. Another question is why to bring your dishes to such a deplorable state that it takes a titanic effort to clean. Isn't it easier to wash and clean immediately after cooking? What all the housewives and call)))))

    Somewhere I read that the best way to clean an old cast iron skillet is to completely put it in a burning fire. They wrote that after the fire, it remains only to wash!

  4. a housewife says

    mine is not mine, and with time the carbon is formed and boiling is really one of the most effective ways. After boiling special efforts, it is not necessary to apply; the “husk” falls behind quite easily. Burning in the fire - is extreme, where to put it? Once, living in a dormitory, where the communal kitchen was far from the rooms, we put frying pans and stoves for fire for a couple of hours - it was super, but at home it didn’t allow, plus the cost of gas or electricity over the years has become such a pleasure from clean dishes will be expensive :-)

    Of course, thanks for the advice, I tried a lot of things when I tried to clean the frying pans from soot and old fat on them. Well a friend came to visit and advised me to buy a grease remover UNICUM. I went and bought. Applied to the pan, and 20 seconds after the application washed away the grease and carbon that was in the pan. After and the stove this tool washed.

    Well so, such problems no longer concern me) Absolutely all my dishes, including my frying pans in a dishwasher, are indizit, she removes carbon and fat for herself)

  7. Inna says

    Today I was pleasantly amazed, having cleaned 20-year-old pans from soot, I used to try, but there was no such effect.
    Water + soap + glue + soda turned out that this is a great tip and method for cleaning.
    Thank you, for me your site was very useful and productive.
