Arch in the kitchen - the design and manufacture of their own hands

Openings instead of doors are a great way to visually enlarge a small kitchen. combining it with a hallway/ living room / balcony, but retaining the division of zones. To improve the appearance of the U-shaped opening, you can make it arched.

Attention: most of the options for re-planning with changing the size or configuration of the openings should be coordinated with the housing authorities.

Variations and design of the arch

The arch between the kitchen and the living room / hallway can be very different in shape - from simple round to complex hyperbolic in oriental style. But the most versatile and common types of arches are the following:

Classical Romanesque, when the arc of the arch smoothly passes into the walls of the opening

This form fits well into narrow and small passages, so it is often used for redevelopment. kitchen in Khrushchev and other typical homes and in cases where the arch is made on the basis of the existing doorway.

As you can see, arched openings would be appropriate not only in classic interiors, but also in modern ones. Here are examples of wide Romanesque arches instead of the door in the kitchen interior:

English (luchkovaya), when the arch has angles at the base of the arc

This option is more suitable for wide openings and is often complemented by additional wall decor. For narrow niches, the bow form of the arch instead of the door is also good, as it will visually make it wider. Examples of kitchen design with a bow arch, see the following selection of photos (scroll).

Trapezoidal arch

A trapezoid-shaped opening is much easier to do with your own hands than a circular arch, and it is also more suitable for design. country style kitchens.

Trapezoid arch

The design of the arch depends not only on the form, but also on its decoration and framing.

  • For small kitchens (for example, in the same Khrushchev houses) it is better to leave the vault without a frame and to confine only to finishing with wallpaper or plaster. The photo below shows an example of a laconic design of an arched opening in the interior of small kitchens.

  • If you nevertheless decided to make the arch more interesting, then try to avoid the contrasting frame, so as not to "overload" the decor of the kitchen and living room / hallway / dining room. Much better will be the finish to match the walls as shown in the following photo.

Decorating the arch in the kitchen brick

  • If the opening is wide, then in the choice of arch design you are limited only by the general style of the interior. You can decorate the arch not only with ready-made or custom-made arched moldings, but also with artificial / natural bricks, stones, mosaics, pilasters, and columns.

How to make an arched doorway with your own hands in 7 steps from the GCR

To make an arch of plasterboard with your own hands, you will need 1-2 free days and the following materials.

Instruments:

  • Screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • Perforator;
  • Scissors / hacksaw or Bulgarian - will be needed to give profiles a rounded shape;
  • Jigsaw or hacksaw - needed for cutting drywall;
  • Needle roller;
  • Nylon cord / wooden ruler and pencil or engineering compass - for drawing a template of the arch of the correct form according to the compass principle.

Materials:

  • GKL 12.5 mm - for two sides of the arch frame;
  • The strip of arched gypsum board (6.5 mm) or normal (12.5 mm or 9 mm) - for the arch end;
  • Metal starting profiles UD27 and, if necessary, reinforce the case of the arch profile CD 60;
  • Self-tapping screws with dowels;
  • Everything you need for puttying: serpyanka, finishing plaster putty, primer, etc.

So that making the arch does not seem like something complicated to you, we broke the whole process into 7 steps.

  1. Carefully dismantle the old door and its box. If necessary, increase the height / width of the opening with a manual diamond saw or wall saw, if the partition thickness is thicker than 20 cm.
  2. We secure the frame from the profiles to the doorway using screws and anchor dowels (supplied). To do this, first cut the profile (UD 27) with a knife for metal into three parts of the following dimensions: 1 part = width of the opening, 2 parts = height of the arch. The long profile is fixed to the “ceiling” of the niche, and the short - to the walls as shown in the photo. Then we repeat the same actions for the other side.
  • Profiles must be mounted with a space from the edge of the wall / ceiling equal to the thickness of the gypsum board;
  • Mounting step - 10 cm.

  1. We proceed to the manufacture of the body of the arch of plasterboard. To do this, you need to draw a full-size template on the Whatman paper and then cut the arch body through it. The second way is to first cut out a rectangle of the desired width and height from the gypsum board, and then draw an arc directly along it according to the compass principle using a pencil and cord / plank as shown in the photo below. Cut off the excess and cut the resulting detail as a pattern on the second sheet of drywall. The two halves of the vault are ready.

  • The easiest way is to cut a plasterboard with an electric saw, but if it is not there, a hacksaw or a saw on drywall will help.

  1. Now it's time to mount the two parts of the arch to the frame with self-tapping screws, flushing them flush (in level) with drywall in 10 cm increments.
  • After installation, you should make sure that both parts are installed exactly and match each other in level. If necessary, their levels can be equalized with the help of a planer for drywall.
  1. Next we need to make and secure the end strip. Butt cut later, but for now let's make the basis for its installation from the same profiles. For this, they need to be made flexible so that they can take the form of an arc. We measure the desired length of the guides, and then we cut their sides in steps of 2-5 cm, depending on the steepness of the bend.

Now fasten the resulting arched profiles from the inside to the arch body.

Profile fastening to the arch

  • If the arch is deep (more than 60 cm), then at this stage it is necessary to additionally install jumpers inside it, so that the arch turns out to be strong and rigid. Jumpers can be made from the rack profile of the CD-60 and even the “bars” of the foam;
  • If the walls of the opening are too narrow, then the end strip is fixed with glue.
  1. Finally, cut the end strip of the desired length and width.
  • If you bought a flexible arched drywall, then you just need to fasten it to the profiles, gently right during the installation process giving it the desired bend;
Arch from gypsum DIY
  • Regular drywall should be processed: first, it is easy to walk with a needle roller from the marked side (!) Along the entire length of the strip, soak the water evenly with a brush or sponge, and then put the strip so that it can bend under its own weight and take a round shape. This process can last 2-12 hours, you need to wait for the moment when drywall looks dry, but more flexible. Needless to say, testing the flexibility bar should be done carefully.

It is necessary to fasten the end strip to the arch in the same way as you fastened the parts earlier, that is, inserting self-tapping screws into the level with drywall and observing the 10 cm step.

  1. Well, that's all, it remains only to finish the arch - to pierce, and then paint, plaster decorative plaster, to paste over with wall-paper, to frame with a ready arch from MDF / tree or to revet with a natural / artificial stone, a brick, a mosaic.

How to make an arch with the help of “supplementary” interior arch with a rectangular arch

The easiest and most profitable way to do a rectangular opening with an arched doorway and frame it at the same time is to simply buy and install a supplementary interior arch with a rectangular vault as in the pictures below.

Interroom arch with a rectangular arch

  • Sometimes the tab of the arched frame structure requires an increase in height and expansion of a rectangular opening. One more minus - the skeleton of the structure will be visible;
  • It is not always possible to find a finished arch in the right size and shape.

An example of how the interroom arch between the kitchen and the living room in the classic interior looks is presented in the following photo.
