The “washable wallpaper” feature is truly an operational feature, not a separate category of wallpaper. But this quality should have any finishing material in the kitchen. Let's find out which types of wallpaper can be called washable.

Washable wallpapers are:
- moisture resistant - you can wipe only with a soft cloth, moderately soaked in water, and therefore their use is not recommended for the kitchen;
- washable - you can wipe only with a rag or sponge using weak alkaline solutions. This will remove dust, light dirt, fresh stains, but not grease;
- super washable - washing with soap solutions with a sponge is allowed;
- superwashable and abrasion resistant - wear-resistant and moisture-resistant coatings that can be washed with a solution using not only sponges, but also brushes.

Also washable wallpaper must be labeled by type of material.
For the kitchen are suitable such types as:
- Foamed vinyl - with a pronounced volume texture, without embossing. Very light, but dense, and therefore easily glued, masking minor surface defects. They can be wiped, but very carefully and without the use of brushes.
- Flat vinyl - This is hot stamping vinyl. Varieties: "Compact Vinyl", "Super Wash", "Screen Printing" (pictured below). Their basis may also be paper or non-woven. The design of such coatings is a variety of imitations of fabric, leather, etc. Flat vinyl is excellent for washing, but does not “breathe” and glues only on smooth walls.
- Embossed vinyl. Embossed vinyl is produced by embossing a embossed layer. So you can imitate decorative plaster or any other surface pattern.
- Structural wallpaper for painting - This non-woven wallpaper for painting. Excellent finishing material that breathes and washes, transfers up to 8 cycles of water-based paint.
- Glass fiber - this is a coating for painting, consisting of fiberglass and having improved performance, so they are often used for finishing non-residential premises with high traffic. They are not afraid of moisture or friction, and in addition they are breathable. The basis for glass wall paper is most often paper, and they are usually painted with water-based acrylic paints. They are made in standard textures - rhombus, gunny, herringbone and so on. Keep in mind that glass wallpaper rolls into a roll face down.
Best and worst wallpapers for the kitchen
- The best choice for the kitchen: the so-called "solid" vinyl wallpaper on non-woven base, which "breathe" and serve 15 years.
- The best washable wallpaper for painting: glass wallpaper - they are much stronger than non-woven.
- The worst choice for the kitchen: paper wallpaper - not the best choice for the kitchen, even if it is a “duplex” (two-layer paper) with a moisture resistant coating. After all, these canvases will not withstand a large number of wash cycles, in addition they burn out and serve only 5 years.
- The best base: non-woven - unlike a paper backing, non-woven non-woven is not afraid of moisture, does not dry out, does not deform, covers cracks up to 2 mm, soundproof, does not support burning, better tolerates wall movements of a building. And it is also much easier to glue, since the strips will not stretch from the glue, which means that the drawing will be easier to join.
Non-standard wallpaper - cork and metallized
There are other types of roll coatings that can be classified as:
- Metallized Wallpaper - This is one of the most advanced materials. How do they differ from standard roll coatings? The base here is porous paper and aluminum foil coated with a protective layer and paint to ensure better durability. The protective layer also performs the function of the dielectric. Such coatings differ in their truly original appearance with a smooth or embossed surface.
- Cork - These are eco-friendly coatings made from cork oak bark. The basis of them is paper and non-woven. However, the color palette in this case is not too diverse - it is ocher, dark and light brown tones. Cork wallpapers are considered hypoallergenic and create a high-quality heat and sound insulation layer. How can they be washed? Wet sponges with detergent - moisture does not harm them, since the protective wax layer is applied to the material on top. By the way, these wallpapers can last for about 20 years.
Three more nuances on pasting washable wallpaper
- Most washable coatings have a heavy weight (more than 120 g / sq.m), so choose the appropriate glue. In addition, even if the base is non-woven, the glue should be applied to the canvas and to the walls.
- For washable vinyl wallpaper need antiseptic glue with fungicides.
- And most importantly - the glue for washable wallpaper for the kitchen must be moisture resistant.
